Selectable, countable cells: how would you do it?

I'm starting to plan how to approach a new assignment, and I'm curious how other might approach it.

It consists of a table, 5 columns and x rows.  Each "cell" contains a blurb of text.  The user can click on a cell to "select " it, and it stays "selected" (and highlighted) until clicked again, toggling.  Only 1 cell per row can be selected at any time. Finally, I need to count the number of selections per column and display a total count for each column.

Thoughts?  I was thinking a datagrid, but I'm not sure how to handle the highlighting and 1-per-row situation. Most things I've done with datagrids have dealt with whole rows, not "cells".

      Any rough suggestions appreciated.
