Using "Fit Artboard to Artwork Bounds" in an action?

Does not look like you can try a script.

I'm speaking from my readings here over time and not experience, but as far as I know, up to CS3 at least, the artboard size was not accessible to scripting.

Yes, this needs to be something that's added to action capability. I can't believe they forgot to include this. Manually changing the artwork size of 1500 images is not a fun task.

it's been fixed in CS5, it is recordable now.

I'm using CS5 and it still isn't recording. Take a look at this thread. The person makes a suggestion for a workaround to fix the bug.

I don't get you, the "workaround" in that thread is not a workaround at all, inserting menu items is how you supposed to...uh....insert menu items.

that thread pre-dates CS5, and yes, it was not possible to record it before that, but it was fixed in CS5, hence the "workaround" you see there.

It's a workaround for the bug that when I'm recording an action, Illustrator ignores "Fit to Artwork Bounds." You shouldn't have to add the menu item into the action manually after the fact...

And it was for CS5. If' you'll read closely:

then if something doesn't work your way, it is a bug.

Here, would you like me to make a YouTube video to prove to you that it's not recording? I'm using CS5 and it's not recording. We're wasting our time arguing about this.

there's no need for a video, unless you're using "insert menu item" and still your system is not able to record those commands.

I'm not saying the 'Insert Menu Item' method is not working. I'm saying it shouldn't be necessary.

Unless there can be good reason given why "Fit to Artboards" should not be included in creating Actions, I think it's safe to assume that its omission was an unintentional mistake on the part of the programmers upon original implementation, and should be implemented after 3-4 years of complaints. Call it a bug, call it an "oops" moment.. whatever. It's not important!

Other menu items are included in the Action recording functionality. Why not this one? Oops.

Same problem in CS6: neither "Fit to artwork bounds" nor "Fit to selected art" will record for me (although strangely, "Fit to selected art" recorded on the first attempt but never worked again, even after restarting).

Seems to be one of these temperamental flakey things that sometimes conks out. I imagine trashing preferences would fix it, but it's not worth it since the workaround works (albeit clunkily):

• Flyout menu in the the Actions palette
• "Insert menu item"
• From the top menu, choose Objects > Artboads > Fit to Artwork Bounds

Even this seems to be a bit temperamental, though. Sometimes it seems to not actually size the artboard down properly, and sometimes it seems to give different results for running the same action on the same file. Something that seems to work more reliably is the following in your action:

1. Fit to Artwork Bounds
2. Select all
3. Fit to selected artwork

In theory that's just duplication, but it seems to work more reliably than just one or the other .
