    Can Dreamweaver do this?

    New2AdobeForum
Hi All. I'm trying out Dreamweaver to develop a school website. We need it to do the following (among the usual pages): provide a chat area for alums; sell hot lunches/accept payment for hot lunches or uniforms; private pages for each class on which will be children's test scores and homework assignments; lastly, updatable calendars or sign-up lists to be edited/added to by parents. I know that's a lot to ask, but if I could do all this in Dreamweaver, than we can do it ourselves and save the school some money.
      Thank you for your help

No. At least not out of the box. Everything you would require server-side
scripting (PHP, ASP.NET, ColdFusion) and you would have to be reasonably
proficient with the one you choose. Next you would need to build and deploy
          a database, probably MySQL.

You could do much of the customization and assembly using DW, so it would be
a valuable part of your toolbox. But is there a button in DW one can push to
create a payment system, for example? No.

And I might add, save yourself the trouble. There's no other HTML authoring
system that will do this with an 'easy button', either.

If you want capabilities like that, you'd better hire someone experienced to
            do them for you.

You can't do it "in Dreamweaver" in the UI with a magic button or toolbar
but you can certainly do it "with Dreamweaver" as a tool if you have the
required skills and knowledge to set it up.

A couple other "chat area" products I've seen mentioned in this forum are WordPress http://www.wordpress.org or http://www.contentseed.com

For selling, you can either go the route of setting up a merchant account and directly taking credit cards... or go to PayPal and look at their example stores and code, which you modify and paste into your code to then let PayPal do the credit card processing for you

I've done both (direct credit card processing when I first wrote an online store for my wife, switching to PayPal later when she realized that the various monthly fees for doing our own credit cards never stopped even during our "off" season) and will say that going the PayPal route is much easier (my opinion)

Take a look at her page for ONE example of using PayPal http://www.direct2usales.com (as I remember, there are several sample stores at PayPal)

For calendar, read this recent discussion
                                http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?forumid=12&catid=189&threadid =1393311&enterthread=y

I think class pages would use the same "chat" product... just with passwords so only the teacher may update the page

Contentseed is for client editing of an existing site, somewhat similar to
                                  Contribute in concept.
