    Fade line to strong

    Level 7
      http://www.twelveetudes.com/homezzz.php

      Hi.
I have an image on the above site and I was wondering if there was anyway I
can make the linear fade look less like a black dividing line and have a
      smoother progression to white?

      Thanks for any pointers

      Brian

Do you have the image without the gradient background?

            Thanks Peter,

Yep I have it here http://www.twelveetudes.com/home_ng.php

I hope to apply this to a few pages with different images (all Black and
White) and was hoping to get a better result than my attempt!

            Thanks again
            Brian

This will leave you with your original image overlaid with a graphic
filled with a linear white to black gradient. You'll see the handle over
the image. One side has a circle, the other a square. The circle sets
where the gradient starts; the square sets its angle. The distance
between the two of them (which is set by dragging the square) sets how
              wide the fade is.

Play around a bit; you'll hit what you want fairly quickly. I got
something fairly decent looking with the round dot about a thumbsbreadth
outside the image and the square dot just under the subject's sideburns.

Getting a smoother gradient is no problem, but blending the right (dark)side
of his face into it will be I think. Leave it with me I'll have a play.

                  What do you think?

Lost a fair bit of contrast, but best I can do, unless you can get rid of
the background altogether. That is the FWs png so you can play around with
it yourself. I used the Stamp blend mode.

Thanks so much Peter I've uploaded that and it's far better.
                    http://www.twelveetudes.com/homezzz.php for yourself!.

Not sure I have stamp Blend mode on my old FWMX but I'm going to play with
what you sent me and see if I can do similar to other images.

                    Great help thank you

No problem, I think it looks great, very moody :-) I was actualy
using FWsCS4 beta, so you may even have a problem opening it in FWs.
Let me know if you do. Good luck.
