A two-minute lag between my post and your response! Surely you can do better!
Thanks for confirming SHIFT+ALT+right-mouse-button-dragging adjusts brush hardness on a PC in CS4. Since adding the SHIFT key action is what does this using the square brackets shortcut, it was to be expected that the SHIFT key would do likewise in this case---except it does NOT do so for me. And the question becomes why not.
I am using a Matrox 650 video card with dual monitors and an MS wireless keyboard and mouse

Zeno Bokor Jun 14, 2009 10:17 AM (in response to George Austin)if i'm not mistaken, changing the brush tip like that is an advantage of having OpenGL enabled so update your video card drivers and also update Photoshop to 11.0.1. You might also want to try out these: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4056

George Austin Jun 14, 2009 11:18 AM (in response to Zeno Bokor)Updated my Matrox 650 driver to June 5 2009 version. CS4 version has been 11.0.1. No change in paintbrush tweaker behavior.
Have not tried plug-ins cited. Don't understand what they might do for me.

George Austin Jun 14, 2009 3:05 PM (in response to Zeno Bokor)RE: ALT+SHIFT+Right-Mouse-Button-drag to the left/right. This does change brush hardness but not in the way expected. You don't see any change until all buttons are released, rather than getting a continuous on-the-fly representation which, I think, the system is meant to show.
I'm thinking it's because I don't have open GL. My Matrox P650 PCIe 128 video card has only 128MB whereas I have been told that Open GL requires 512MB.

The overall reason for the behavour may be correct, but OpenGL will function with less than 512MB VRAM.
