I would suggest running the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility to get rid of any traces of Reader then try the install again.
Thanks for your response. I acquired the install utility but none of the Adobe elements showed up on the list for removal. I was able to use it to remove some other unwanted items. I did finally download Adobe Reader 9 by bypassing the automatic download feature. Using this forum for the first time was educational. It's great to know people are out there to help.
My next suggestion was going to be to try the FTP site for the complete installer but it looks like you found that.
