Why is a sound buffer good?

I'm thinking about putting an mp3 in my application. I know what a sound buffer is, but why is it beneficial.

I assume you're talking about setting the buffer of the playback. It simply sets the number of seconds of the audio file that would need to download before it begins playing. If you assume everyone has a nice T1 line, there's no need for it. However, if you have folks who are on a very slow DSL connection, you likely would prefer that you give the sound file a 'headstart' because the synchronous playback might not keep up with the live stream.
