you can preload images. and you can start the preloading at any time. the only requirement is you have, at least, two target movieclips. one to display the current image and one to load the next image to be displayed.
how you should do that is difficult to specify without knowing the code you're using to load your images and the code you're using to determine the next image.
I have posted the file and script if you would like to take a look
nothing's attached and i don't usually download and correct project files unless i'm hired to do so.
you can get free help by posting questions but it's less likely you'll get help when asking for files to be downloaded.

I tried as well to make the images load via loadmovie as "kglad" suggested here but unfortunately isn't working. Did you find any solution about it yet? If yes, could you please help me on this as well as I am blindly in need of this too?
I am a flash developer myself with 10 year experience, but I cannot find the solution of this specification with loading the images. Please let me know if you have it solved. I will help you on anything else you might need in flash.
No luck with getting it to work, but Kglad has halped me with several other issues before this one, so I did something different
I made the "image1.jpg" into a "image1.swf" and loaded it that way with the preloader in the file.
I did the same by loading the image through swf embedding it in a flash movie, but unfortunately it wasn't working for if there requires any interaction in the script itself. Are you able to send the source files so that I check in it and see if you have applied changes in the action scrtipt itself? Would greatly appreciate as I am craving for this type of functionality.
Thanks in endlessness,
No I wasn't I tried what you tried and it didn't work
I was more concerned with random image loading proplerly than with the the parent movie checking in before it played, so I bagged it.
So, you mean you are not able to send the source files?
Just not able to get the preloader to work with the random image
