    Navigational Cinema for blu-ray burning

Hey everyone, this is a feature that I hope makes the cut in an update or next version of encore, and it's called navigational cinema.

Navigational cinema is when you can interact with your movie while watching it, for example, while watching a movie, a menu may pop up at a given moment and ask you if you want the character to move to the left or move to the right.

Examples of this include the movies "Final Destination 3" and "Return to House on Haunted Hill"

From what I hear, navigational cinema will only work for blu-ray discs.

That sounds more like an authoring technique. DVDs can also be authored this way. The movie is filmed with each possible option (such as what happens if the actor goes to the left) as a small, seperate timeline. The end action of each timeline goes to the menu asking for the viewer to choose a direction. This begins a new timeline which continues with the selected choice. Encore does not support cels and cel commands, which is how I would guess your example movies were authored. That would allow chapter marks to be sequentially numbered correctly instead of there being a new chapter 1 for each timeline, (as Encore would do).

                                                               Timeline4

                                                              /

                                    Timeline 2>Menu2

                                   /                          \

          Timeline1>Menu1                           Timeline5

                                   \

                                    Timeline 3>Menu3 - Timeline6

                                                              \

                                                               Timeline7

I write reviews for an independent horror magazine (part time) and we reviewed a movie on DVD that did just this. It had 9 different endings, all based on the path chosen by the viewer. An option to watch the movie in its entirety (without options) was also available.

I guess the long and short of it is that it can already be done, with very careful planning and alot of patience. Good luck!

          P.S.

Don't know if I'm allowed to say, The magazine is GASPmagazine.net and the movie is called "It's my party and I'll DIE if I want to". A trailer can be viewed on the video page of GASP or by going to the movie website, www.scotchworthy.com. The trailer does not demonstrate the "Choose your path" feature.
