Need to determine best way to display news and events

    Josie815 Level 1
I posed a previous question regarding making a web page for news and events. The option is to include Wordpress or I could create two columns on my page and do this either in divs or a table. Each news segment would need to have a line divider between the news events.

Since this page will expand with archived news, what would the best solution be if I create a two column page ... table or divs?

It doesn't make a difference really. You can do a table with multiple columns, or set it up with floating DIVs. Tables are easier (arguably) and DIVs are more semantic. You can divide either of the two with padding and a border on the left/right/both.

If your use of "floating" refers to the CSS style "float", then that's
            certainly a workable solution.

            > DIVs are more semantic

            How do you figure that?

Well by semantic I mean "rendered presentation matching the source code". Which, more importantly, means "rendered presentation reads the same way or similar via screen reader".

Have I been misinformed about the virtues of DIVs? Perhaps my understanding is fuzzy?

And what else would I mean by floating Murray, seriously.

I was hoping that my guess was correct, but 'layers' are sometimes called
'floating boxes'. Of course, here we call them 'doodoo' but it's a
colloquialism that not everyone will understand! 8)

                > Well by semantic I mean "rendered presentation matching the source code".

Honestly, I think this is a proprietary usage. To me, ''semantic' means
that the tag itself has some literal, human sensible meaning. The
Dictionary defines it as "relating to meaning in language or logic". I
don't think the <div> tag has any such inherent meaning, at least not in the
same way that <h1> does. I do, however, completely agree with you about the
'sense' of content when it is presented in well planned containers, rather
than fragmented across multiple table cells....

Oh yes, very good points all around. While "division" doesn't mean much more to an average user than "table", it was the semantic nature of the markup that usually accompanies a DIV based layout, and is likewise absent from a table based layout, that I was talking about.

Just so.... Thanks for the clarification.

Great information! Thanks JoeyD and Murray.
I've created a separate web page with 2 columns where I used divs. There will be a difference in the setup for this new 2 column page to include the news and events.

I have two things I want to accomplish with using (preferably) divs. While I use a div for my column settings, do I also include the code for a bottom border to give me a line that breaks each sectioned <p>? I would also like to have one column container set with a background color and to have that container with rounded edges. I know using a table allows me to set cell color and cell width, but I want to achieve this using divs. My mock-up in Photoshop looks great, now I have to find a way to create this in DW. Any suggestions?

I found how to create the shaded box for one of my 2 columns see:
