I'm trying to find a way to outline letters in a PNG or GIF image..sort of like using the find edges filter but I don't want the inside of the image to disappear, I just want to thinly outline the letters in the image so that it shows up more vividly on the background color. Is there a way I can do this with Adobe Fireworks CS3?
Apply a stroke to the text, assuming the text is still text, and not
flattened into the graphic.

Thanks for your reply. The image does not have text, it's a graphic in the shape of text. Is there a way to find the edges and color the outline?
Magic wand the text, then convert it the selection to a path. You can
then stroke the path.
