Must be a corrupt font and or a font cache. You did not recently load a new font by any chance or install a plug in or install a haxie or upgrade some sofware something like that ?
More than likely a corrupt font.
Also repair your permissions.
I tried the font thing, I've removed any recent ones, even rolled back with Time Machine.
Not sure where else or how to deactivate them all, which I thought I would try just to see.
I had installed a font that day but I removed it, cleared font caches etc, but no change.
Thanks for the reply I might keep trying that.
Of course first quit Illustrator then you might have to do use
cocktail to remove the font cache it will probably do a more thorough
job then doing it manually.
Then also trash the settings folder User/Username/library/Preferences/
Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings folder, repair your permissions
and do yourself a favor then restart your computer.
I bet ll will be well then.
is that a program like onyx?
got it, trying it out now.
yes if you are on a pc i did not see that cocktail is for the Mac.
Onyx is a mac app , seems to be the same as cocktail.
So I did everthing, ran cocktail, cleared caches, deleted preferences and fixed permissions.
Still crashed when I tried to open an illustrator file.
Did you try to repair your permissions as well?
Yes, tried everything.
I just remembered on person had this problem because they did not have a default printer. The then chose Acrobat as the default and all was well.
Do a search for this problem and get all the facts straight.
An absolute Identical problem with Illustrator CS3.
Just solved it.
If You have MS Office installed or similar programm - Feel free - UNINSTALL it!
I uninstalled MS Office 2007 and stopped all services with containing name "Office"
Illustrator works as nothing happened.
As it has been mentioned before me. it could be permissions. or other reasons. it may also be your HDD, is old or corrupt, or close to dying. you may have to consider a new replacement for your hard drive. but lets not go to that extent.
WinCS4Cleanupscript.zip 4.6 MB
hey maxqd, last week i think i had exactly the same issue. and also was on the fone with adobe for a very long time.
i had to go the extreme to reinstall the whole Adobe CS4 suite.
and download couple of tools from adobe/support/knowledgebase. site. here are the links: im not sure if you have tried this or not. but i hope this helps, becuase it helped me. and now my illlustrator cs4 is nice and smooth running.
first i downloaded this microsoft removal tool which adobe recommends it as well.
it has simple to follow instructions.
once you run this, then restart your system. and run the next thing. which is the adobe cs4 cleanup cs4 cleanup script. and if youre running other illustrator versions there are same download steps to follow to clean up your older versions of illustrator; i.e. cs3.
then i restarted my system. then after i also ran the dobe cleanup script. its only a small file.
here is the link:
all of this is on the adobe support webpage.
once all this is done. restart your system again, and reinstall your illustrator. hope you succeed.
Tried that, no go.
I think I saw a post about archiving and resintalling the OS (Leopard) , do you think that will work?
Does that chnage anything else on my Mac, as I don't want to have to reinstall everything?
Thanks for your help.
I'll give this a try but I'm running Leopard on a Mac so the Windows thing won't work.
Thanks for your reply.
I actually need to use office quite a lot so I don't want to try that just yet.
Maybe if nothing else works, thanks for your reply.
Archive reinstall you can keep your apps, internet settings and all of
that it just cleans u your system
I reinstalled and it seems to be working, but what a pain to have to do that.
Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated.
So it was working great, updated latest Mac software updates and now it's crashing again.
This is pretty bad, so it's possibly an Apple thing causing this.
Maybe I'll re-install and not upgrade anything!
