    Removing background in vector art

      Hi,

I don't venture into this forum too often as Illustrator is not my forte at all.  So this may be an easy question, I don't know.  I have a piece of clip art, and I'm trying to remove the background.  Ordinarily I would use the direct-selection tool to select and remove it.  However, all the pieces of the illustrator file are connected (I can't select any one individual piece).  It's not a compound path so I can't release it.  I can't use the Eraser on it.  When I look at it in Layers, the layer's named Mesh, so I guess it's created with the Mesh Tool somehow.  I don't know anything about the Mesh tool, so I don't know if I can unmesh something or not.

Anyway, here is the file.  I'm trying to remove the gradient background so I can have open curtains with a transparent background (or so I can use each curtain individually).  The only thing I've been able to remove are the stars.

      Here's a link to a zip file: http://www.rotor.com/temp/curtains.zip

I'd appreciate any help someone could give me with this.

      Thanks, Phyllis
