Web crawlers cannot read text in swf files.
I will read it thanks.
If you are going to make any serious decisions regarding SEO and revenue streams, you had better have a pretty good understanding of SEO, webcrawling, swf in the browser, etc, etc...
I posted a question to find out how to architect a Flex application considering Flex and SEO.
I spent several hours searching through 3 Flex books for SEO optimization. Unfortunately, nothing was mentioned in any of these books.
Still haven't heard a response as to how future based Flex applications should be architected, considering SEO.
Adobe has no official recommendation for architectures for SEO at this time. Adobe is relatively agnostic about application architecture in general. Sure we're behind Cairngorm, but PureMVC and other offerings are out there and it will be interesting to see how they provide for SEO in the future.
I would guess that a good MVC architecture of some sort will be advantageous for SEO.

I question whether you need SEO for applications built using Flex.
As a parallel, do you want to search Word? Or do you want to search a Word Document? If SEO is important, you want your content indexed not the application.
That said, if SEO is importnat you may want to avoid Flash / Flex (Ajax and Silverlight ) altogether.
We did an interview for it on The Flex Show: http://www.theflexshow.com/blog/index.cfm/2008/9/10/The-Flex-Show-Episode-54 however I remember the guest having no definitive solution.

If your "creations" need to be searchable, don't create them in Flex/Flash, but that does not mean do not use Flex/Flash.
You can have searchable text in your HTML wrapper script for your Flex applications, and you can have searchable text in web pages that have links to your Flex applications.
Not using Flex/Flash because you need SEO just doesn't make sense. Do what you need to do to have both SEO and Flex.
