    Problem with Optimizing PDFs

    rjones888 Community Member

I have a client who wants us to make sure PDF files are compatible with Adobe 6.0 and later (I just got them to change that from 4.0!). When I generate the PDF file, I get a file that is compatible with 6.0 and later but when I save the file PDF file it converts to 7.0. I've tried optimizing the file using Acrobat 9.0 but then my bookmarks no longer work and the page numbering goes wacky; it's a vicious cycle. I have had success with other reports but not this one. Could the problem be with this particular file or is there a bug with Acrobat 9.0?

If you are using PDF Optimize, it may be some of the options you have selected. There are options to remove things and such that may be the issue. It might also be that some of the items are not backward compatible and are deleted for that reason. As an alternative, you might try Reduce File Size (in AA8 it is under the Document menu - they keep changing locations of commands).

I did try using the "Reduce File Size" option instead of Optimize and that seemed to work until today when the client informed me that the fonts were no longer subsetted.

Was there a recent upgrade to Acrobat 9.0? Is that why I'm having problems? I don't remember having these problems a couple of months ago.

The current version is 9.1.2. Be sure to install updates in order, they are typically not cummulative.

That's the version I have. I also unchecked most of the settings when Optimizing the file. No luck.

I found out from our client's web group that they are having the same problems. They are reverting back to version 7.0 until they can find a way to get 9.0 to work correctly.

So for now, I'm going to consider it a problem with 9.0 and see if I can get the IT people to reinstall the version of Acrobat I was using a couple of months ago when I wasn't having these problems.

                Thanks!
