you can use a loop to play any timeline backwards. an enterframe loop is ideal if the frame rate doesn't need to change.
Thanks for the help, unfortunately I still don't understand how to write the actual ActionScript. It seems like it should be an easy thing to do - I am so confused!
I am trying to direct the timeline by using frame labels, at least thats the way I was controlling the forward movement. How would I tell a specific labeled area to move backwards when a "back" button is pushed?

there's no code that can determine what you want.
so, if you want to direct the timeline to play from frame m to frame n (forwards or backwards), you can do that. but you have to specify m and n or have some way to determine those frames.
