    Can Audition match Auto-tune?

    Sengstack Community Member

Auto-tune pitch correction software from Antares can change pitch on a note-by-note basis. I have seen it demo'd but have not tried it.

What I'd like to know from those in-the-know, is how the pitch tools in Audition -- Bender, Correction, Shifter -- compare. They do not appear to be as user-friendly or offer the kind of control and accuracy as Auto-tune.

On single lines, Audition's pitch correction if applied manually is incredibly accurate. I wouldn't ever use it in auto mode, so I don't really know how that compares. I'd guess that it wouldn't necessarily stand up to competition to software dedicated to the job though. By all accounts, the one to go for isn't the Antares thing, but Melodyne.

As SteveG says manual operation of AA's pitch correction is the way to go.

Really amazing results can be achieved.

FWIW I wouldn't even use AutoTune let alone it's automatic mode!

Good info from both of you. Thanks.

What great timing.  Adobe Digital Video and Audio Evangelist, Jason Levine, just posted a video tutorial on using Audition's built in Pitch Correction tool to accomplish everything from subtle pitch correction to full on T-Cher Robot Synth sinnging.  Check it out at http://blogs.adobe.com/jlevmedia/2009/07/do_you_believein_auto-tuning_p.html

Well I watched Jason's tutorial, and having heard the results he got, even with the attack fader backed off, I'm sticking with the manual version, thank you very much.

Why? Because what the automatic settings do is apply the same attack settings to every note, and they also don't allow for natural variations within the note. So all notes get treated the same, whether you like it or not. So if you want something to sound natural and in tune, do it manually - as we've both suggested, based entirely on experience.

But that's where Audition is good - at least you get the choice!

Thanks for that Durin & SteveG

Like SteveG I go for the manual correction every time but that is nothing to do with AA - I would never even use AutoTune in automatic mode and it has nowhere near the power of AA's pitch correction.

The point however is that AA has these great 'hidden' functions and as SteveG says the good thing is you have a choice.

Some time ago I made a video showing just how to use the manual mode and I think that really tells a much better story.

I know SteveG is looking at showing it on AudioMasters but in the meantime you can see it here http://www.aatranslator.com.au/training.html

Mind you I'm no video expert or Jason Levine.

What's on the tutorial is a good case in point - that's exactly what the automatic function wouldn't achieve - and it's also the most common sort of vocal problem.

(Yes, I'm still working out the best solution for being able to collect all of these videos together - it's not so much a storage thing, but more a matter of yet another forum rearrangement and to an extent, I'm still pondering it. But at least we can rearrange ours - which is more than Adobe seem to be capable of with theirs... )

And none of us are Jason Levine. He's about a foot taller than me, for a start. And he has more problems with junk filters than I do...
