We are currently (as of Beta1) not supporting import from Fireworks into Catalyst. We are working on it as we speak (or type in this case).
I realize Flash Catalyst Beta1 doesn't support directly going from Fireworks to Flash Catalyst. However, your reply is intensely misleading and generally your team's communications on the issue of Fireworks support is causing Adobe some serious problems with the interaction design community that is intended to be the target audience for this product. Why? Because Flash Catalyst Beta 1 (supposedly) does support opening FXG files, which Fireworks (supposedly) can produce. Witness your launch window (which says "Create New Project From Design File...from FXG file") as well as this authoritative article: http://www.developmentarc.com/site/2009/06/misconceptions-of-firework-cs4-vs-photoshop-cs4 -support-in-flash-catalyst/comment-page-1/#comment-14 .
So perhaps I posted my question in the wrong forum. It's a Fireworks CS4 command script that's crapping out on me. I've emailed the Fireworks product manager and a kind Adobe employee spotted my complaint in Twitter and has offered to email me an updated export command script.
If you or anybody else have any other tips about how to resolve my issue, I'd be glad to get them.
Seriously, wow! Adobe can't seem to make up its mind about whether they want to support Fireworks in general, and with Catalyst in particular.
Despite the confusing public attestations of Fireworks-->Catalyst support, I'm pleased to report that the product managers of both Fireworks and Catalyst have contacted me outside this forum to help resolve my issue. I'm actually still waiting to hear from the Fireworks developers who are supposed to get in touch and help me identify the root cause of the bug I encountered, but after I created a fresh FW file in CS4 the Export to FXG command worked pretty well. Not without visual issues in Catalyst, but at least it worked. So presently I'm theorizing that the problem I had was due to the file's origins as a CS3 FW file.
Anyways, let's all keep up our hopes that Fireworks has a long and beautiful future ahead of it. There is no better tool in the Adobe suite for GUI design, after all.
Hmm, weird. My file began its life in CS4, and it's still denied by
Catalyst. I do maintain some hope that Adobe will stand by its somewhat
erratic promises to fully support Fireworks down the line. Because there's
no way I'm going to start designing layouts in Photoshop, that's for sure.
