Configure DW8 to have full menu options for .ssi files

    Sachse_Doug
I know DW has many configurable options through the various xml config files. I use .ssi files but the menu options like insert | tag (or image or hyperlink) is grayed out for ssi. Is there a way to have these options available just like for html files?

What is the file extension for your include file? If you had named it with
"*.htm(l)" then these options would be available.

The including file extension is .shtml. When the .shtml file is displayed in the DW window, the .ssi file is grayed. Clicking on any part of that displayed .ssi file causes it to open in a new tab --which then does not offer the more convenient menu options. Each html tag has to be completely filled in without the assistance of auto complete (and the various other edit helpers like being able to point and click for image references or spell check, etc.).

When you use server-side includes, there are at least two files involved:

              1. The parent file
              2. The include file

The parent file (the one RECEIVING the included file's code) must be named
with a file extension that triggers a server parse to find the include
directives (e.g., *.shtm(l), *.asp, *.php, etc.). Of course, the extension
would have to match the server models supported by a) your site definition,
and b) the hosting server. The include file (the code fragment file) may be
named with any extension you desire (we joke here about naming them with the
'monkeybutt' extension, since that extension name is irrelevant to the
function of the file itself). HOWEVER, if the include file is named with an
extension that DW doesn't recognize, then you will not get a Design view
option when the file is opened.

For this reason, it's best to just name your include files with the *.htm(l)
extension. Alternatively, if you *really* like '*.monkeybutt', you can add
this extension to the list of file extensions that DW recognizes -

Modifying the MMDocumentTypes.xml file was just the answer I was looking for. Thank you VERY much !!!

You're welcome. It makes no sense to have include files named with the
                  shtm(l) extension, though.
