that depends on what you mean by simple.
you can update your textfields whenever a navigation button is used, if that's the only way to change frames. and you can always use an enterframe loop to update those textfields.
There are back and next buttons but also other interactions that will advance to the next frame and a drop down menu that allows the user to jump around.
I would just need to do something like you mentioned with the enterframe loop to update the fields I think... Would that be route to go?
yes, if it's too complex to code for each navigation device. on your main timeline you could use:
totalTF.text=this._totalframes; // where totalTF is the textfield instance name that will display totalframes
currentTF.text=this._currentframe; // where currentTF is the obvious

You have to make a text with the instance name of frames.
