RodWard Mar 26, 2014 6:35 PM (in response to sarahw222222)You cannot do this with standard quiz questions because if the learner EVER selects a correct answer for that question then Captivate will of course mark it as being correct.
Instructionally speaking, asking a user to eventually get a question correct, and then marking their question as incorrect, is somewhat counter-intuitive don't you think? If they were only really allowed one attempt to get the question correct, why have them jumping through hoops to eventually get it right and then be told it was a futile effort anyway because they were failed on the first attempt? Adult learners don't enjoy futility. Reward them for sticking with the task until success is achieved. It's a better strategy in my view.
You could potentially set up a custom slide with interactive objects to achieve this result, but it will not be using a quiz question slide, and it would not be counted as part of the Quiz Review (if you were using that feature).

sarahw222222 Mar 27, 2014 10:13 AM (in response to RodWard)Sorry, i wasn't very clear on why I'm looking to do this. I'm actually looking to do it in an assessment rather than a quiz. What I'd like to happen is this:
-learner is given instructions and they need to click on an area of the screen.
-the first time they click on the wrong area of the screen, a caption appears giving them a hint (i'm not using the built-in hints in captivate, i've built something else that accomplishes this)
-the second time they click on the wrong area, a point is deducted from their score, and a caption appears telling them where they should've clicked. right now, i have this set up in captivate with a failure caption. i want the user to be forced to click the right area before they can progress in the assessment (hence the infinite attempts), but i want that second attempt to be scored.
thoughts on how to do this?? any help is greatly appreciated!

Lilybiri Mar 27, 2014 10:18 AM (in response to sarahw222222)Do you need to report the score to a LMS?
http://blog.lilybiri.com/link-score-to-attempts-in-custom-questions just to see how much work this will need. I'll leave you to Rod for the rest of the thread.

sarahw222222 Mar 27, 2014 11:26 AM (in response to Lilybiri)Yes, we need to report it to an LMS. Does that make it impossible?
Thanks for the link - I will take a look right now!

RodWard Mar 27, 2014 5:48 PM (in response to sarahw222222)If you're using scorable interactive objects (e.g. click boxes or buttons) to register the clicks from the user then you can certainly set these to report to the quiz, which will then be reported to the LMS.
However, any successful action for these interactive objects will then contribute to the score.
So if the user clicks unsuccessfully on the first attempt, they will NOT get any points added to the score. But clicking successfully on the target area for their second attempt WOULD get them points added to the quiz.
On completion of their quiz attempt, if they continue past the Quiz Results slide, their score will be sent to the LMS.
