JimHess-hP0R75 Jul 21, 2009 3:12 PM (in response to SF Ellen)If you add an image to the quick collection you are adding it to the Lightroom "Quick Collection" rather than one of the collections that you have created. It doesn't mean to "quickly" add the image to another collection. The Quick Collection is just part of Lightroom, and that is probably where your images are going.
One of the easiest ways to add images to a collection is to highlight one or more images and then just drag them to the collection that you have created. -

Geoff the kiwi Jul 21, 2009 3:51 PM (in response to SF Ellen)Also you can add them to the temporary "Quick Collection" using B. Then select the quick collection to move your selects from the QC to your collection.
The QC can be a handy tool for making fast selections that then can be transferred to your own collections.

SF Ellen Jul 21, 2009 3:56 PM (in response to Geoff the kiwi)This is where I'm getting confused though--I hit 'B', the small grey circle shows up on the image, but I do not see it anywhere under 'collections'. I've done this a number of time and cant figure out where LR is actually putting these images

john beardsworth Jul 21, 2009 4:03 PM (in response to SF Ellen)B usually adds an image to the Quick Collection (which is in the Library panel) but can instead add to any other collection which you have set as the target.

SF Ellen Jul 21, 2009 4:12 PM (in response to john beardsworth)OK, but this is where I am getting confused.
Thre are about 5 folders under collections.
One has one image in it, that I grabbed and dragged in.
The others have zero images, even though I have hit 'b' on a handful of other images--it is as if B isnt working, or is sending them to a hidden folder? Or is it a bug in my version of LR?
It is very confusing!
That said, how do I set something as a target? Maybe for some odd reason nothing is set, and that is why nothing is showing up?

9. Re: Collections, ack!
john beardsworth Jul 21, 2009 4:51 PM (in response to SF Ellen)Those collections are examples of smart collections which shipped with LR. Personally, I would delete them, as they confuse more than explain, and then learn how to use collections.
There are 3 types in the Collections panel:
Collection Sets are containers of the two other types
Smart collections are like saving queries - eg images shot in this period and rated > 3
Dumb collections are collections of thumbnails which you drag to them and are entirely arbitrary.
A fourth type is in the Library panel - that is the Quick Collection, a quick and temporary place to group pictures.
