john beardsworth Jul 21, 2009 4:01 PM (in response to SF Ellen)A catalogue is a register that records the location of all your pictures, descriptive metadata and adjustments. A collection is an arbitrary subdivision of that catalogue, grouping pictures from any folders and also storing output settings (print layout, slideshow, web settings).

Geoff the kiwi Jul 21, 2009 5:00 PM (in response to SF Ellen)Catalogs are LR databases that contain information for files such as metadata, develop instructions, virtual copies - along with a link to the files storage repository (HD, etc).
Collections are groupings of files within the database, they can be across folders and as such are just further links to the files. There are many ways to create collections.
