    Glow only bright areas

    Navarro Parker Level 3

One problem with AE's Glow effect is that it wants to glow everything (even when the threshold is set high).  Sometimes this is great, but most of the time, I don't want my darks to get the glowy effect.

Any tips on how to prevent this?

Effect --> Channel --> Shift Channel (based on Luminance, you could of course also use Knoll Unmult), then Glow, then CC Composite or something similar to combine it with the unprocessed source. Add extra Levels effects to control the threshold. Or naturally, just do all that on a duplicate layer for more control. Since your stuff seems to be 3D, you could also always create a custom pass for it...
