Larry G. Schneider Jul 23, 2009 4:45 PM (in response to Simon Gregory)Don't forget the Effects menu. You can use the Convert to Shape>Rounded Rectangle which will remain live and editable unless you Expand Appearance to flatten it.

Simon Gregory Jul 23, 2009 5:15 PM (in response to Larry G. Schneider)Thanks. I see that works. It seems quite a bizarre option, adding extra size or a completely different proportion or even shape. I'm sort of struggling to see the real world uses of those options, Though it does work with vanilla settings for what I want...

3. Re: editable rounded corner rectangles
Larry G. Schneider Jul 23, 2009 5:32 PM (in response to Simon Gregory)I get a lot of maps from ARCGIS with locations marked by font characters. This allows me to make different sizes and shapes into one marker at a single go. Another use is to add a shaped fill behind text to set it off from a background.

Wade_Zimmerman Jul 23, 2009 6:36 PM (in response to Simon Gregory)If you are making buttons for a website and there are a group and you need to change the text but need the shape to hug the text the same way this is good as all you have to do is copy the object then highlight the text and type the new text and the shape conforms to the new text.
If you decide you want a ellipse instead of a rounded rectangle you can do that and you have control over the relationships which you can then change thiose as well.
It is good to have this control sadly though you cannoty change the corners individually one at a time nor can you make custome shapes.

Thanks.

Jesseham Jul 24, 2009 7:50 AM (in response to Simon Gregory)effect -> stylize -> round corners will stay live and editable via the appearance panel as well. (note: there are 2 stylize submenus. Look at the top one.)

Judy_Arndt Jul 28, 2009 12:00 AM (in response to Jesseham)The AICS4 rounded rectangle effect is still limited to a single radius setting for every corner.
FreeHand users enjoy much greater versatility with the FreeHand rectangle tool. Rounded corners can be set independently for each corner. Adjustments can be made either numerically or by option-dragging corner handles. The corner settings remain fixed if the rectangle is dragged to resize. Settings scale if the rectangle is scaled with the scale tool.
Illustrator users should demand as much.

Doug Katz Jul 28, 2009 1:25 PM (in response to Judy_Arndt)Yes they should.
In the meantime Xtreme Paths, introduced to me by the inimitable Mr. Scott Weichert is an excellent plug-in, without problems as far as I can see and so well integrated into AICS that the rich path manipulation tool kit feels very much an organic part of Illustrator .

PrepressPro1 Jul 28, 2009 1:40 PM (in response to Judy_Arndt)Wow, I thought this was the Illustrator Fourm. Not much use finding the answer in Freehand. I think there is also a Round 1 Corner action for Illustrator which lets you round one corner in, yes, that's right, Illustrator.
Yes, here it is.

Jesseham Jul 28, 2009 1:52 PM (in response to PrepressPro1)Better than that action is the script found here: http://park12.wakwak.com/~shp/lc/et/en_aics_script.html
It won't wreck neighboring curves like the action will.
Neither of them will leave the resulting corners live, as FH does.

Sure there's use in finding an answer in FreeHand, which Adobe now owns. Requests for a feature such as FreeHand's live shape primitives may see these features being incorporated into future versions Illustrator.
Xtreme Paths costs $139.00. Much of what it adds to Illustrator can already be done in FreeHand at no extra cost.
Why should Illustrator users continue to pay third-party vendors for vector-drawing functions that Adobe already owns?

Doug Katz Jul 28, 2009 4:15 PM (in response to Judy_Arndt)True dat, Judy.
I just want to do what Xtreme Paths lets me do... by whatever means necessary. Not a defense of this product or third party products or spending money. Just a practical reality while I wait for Adobe.

14. Re: editable rounded corner rectangles
Simon Gregory Jul 28, 2009 5:19 PM (in response to Judy_Arndt)Yeh, I'm coming from Freehand so am familiar with the various corner options, and they are great. I regularly do a brochure in Indesign that has heaps of shapes that have rounded corners on 2 diagonally opposite sides, that need reshaping often. It's ,uch slower grabbing the needed points and resizing in 2 steps. AI and ID could use that FH feature definitely. I seem to find Illustrator a bit tricky. you can do lots of cool things of course. So I guess I'll get there.
Selection will always be my main issue I think... making combinations of nested/opverlapping/hidden objects etc. It's hard not to argue that FH is objectively far superior in that area.
