1. Re: Basic Feathering Problems
Stix Hart Jul 29, 2009 2:43 AM (in response to Michael R. Davis)Never seen that before. I'm clutching at straws here but I assume you've made sure it isn't grouped, or you're not accidentally applying that feather to an object style that is applied to everything else...

P Spier Jul 29, 2009 5:42 AM (in response to Michael R. Davis)Could we have more details, please.Start with version of InDesign.
When you say "amongst some text," are these inline or anchored objects, or independent frames?
How are you selecting the frame and applying the feather?
Have you tried any troubleshooting methods already?

3. Re: Basic Feathering Problems
Michael R. Davis Jul 29, 2009 5:42 PM (in response to P Spier)Using 5.0.4 Windows XP. The graphics are grayscale TIF in independant frames. I have no objects styles in the file. Nothing is grouped.
I am selecting the graphic with selection tool then object>effects>basic feather.
When I click preview the basic feather is being applied to the graphics edges but the other three graphics are lightening off as is the text but the feathering is not being applied to them.
I have tried other graphics and on a different computer and the same things happens.

P Spier Jul 30, 2009 4:46 AM (in response to Michael R. Davis)Hmmmm...
What settings are you using for Appearance of Black in the prefs? It doesn't seem to make a difference on my system, but it would help to know.
Feathering is transparency, and there are some display issues associated with using transparency. Typically text on the page will get bolder, not lighter, though, so this is a puzzle, and it happens in both normal and preview view modes.
If you zoom in, what does Separations preview report for values in realtion to what you expect?

Petteri_Paananen Jul 30, 2009 4:59 AM (in response to Michael R. Davis)Have you tried to put your featherd grayscale tiff to behind other images and text by using Object>Arrange>Send to back?

Michael R. Davis Jul 30, 2009 8:16 PM (in response to Petteri_Paananen)I am now convinced that it is just a display issue.
I took values at certain spots in the non feathered tifs before applying the feathering and afterwards and the readings were the same, so it appears that when the text and graphics lighten it is only a screen thing.
It makes no difference where the graphic is on the layer stack and my Appearance of Black settings are On Screen display as rich black and for Print/Export are black accurately.

P Spier Jul 31, 2009 5:14 AM (in response to Michael R. Davis)Transparency display anomalies can make their way into exported PDF, too, where they will appear on screen and in print on low-resolution devices, but generally disappear on press output.
