Eugene Tyson Jul 29, 2009 7:45 AM (in response to Bob Bringhurst)Thanks Bob,
A short survey it was.

Peter Spier Jul 29, 2009 8:45 AM (in response to Bob Bringhurst)What do you mean by "Issue"?
Are you looking for problems, or success stories, or what?

3. Re: Survey for people using page numbering
Bob Bringhurst Jul 29, 2009 9:00 AM (in response to Peter Spier)Anyone who had a recent experience -- good or bad -- with page numbering in InDesign. For example, you may have tried restarting numbering on page 7 but couldn't figure out how to do it. I'm specifically interested in how people use InDesign Help to learn about page numbering so that I can make improvements.

Peter Spier Jul 29, 2009 9:50 AM (in response to Bob Bringhurst)So you probably don't want to hear from those of us who don't have trouble and haven't tried to use Help to solve the problem...

5. Re: Survey for people using page numbering
Peter Spier Jul 29, 2009 9:52 AM (in response to Bob Bringhurst)For what it's worth, and you've probably noticed it too, I think there are more questions about numbering in books than in individual files.

typesetter21323 Jul 29, 2009 10:53 AM (in response to Bob Bringhurst)My needs are simple. I number the front matter in roman numerals and the main body of the document in arabic numerals starting again at 1. It works fine.

7. Re: Survey for people using page numbering
Bob Bringhurst Jul 29, 2009 10:54 AM (in response to Peter Spier)Right. I'm more interested in hearing from people who are just now learning how to use page numbering or any feature related to page numbering. But if a more advanced user has struggled with a more advanced page numbering task such as adding a Previous Page variable to a master spread, I'm interested in that feedback as well.

8. Re: Survey for people using page numbering
[Jongware] Jul 29, 2009 12:37 PM (in response to typesetter21323)Just wanted to chime in on the no-problems-here bandwagon.
I *think* that most of the people who complain about limited options have no experience in creating books, nor, it seems, in reading books -- f'r instance, they never noticed odd pages go on the right and even ones on the left. They never noticed books hardly ever start at page 2. They don't understand roman numbered front matter should also has an even number of pages. They don't think it's weird to have only right hand pages numbered.
Within those limitations, I can make ID document and book numbering jump through hoops. As long as they're circular hoops, that is. (And who'd ever heard of rectangular hoops? Or triangular?)
(PS. I get asked rather frequently if I can remove that annoying blank last page, right after the one that says '127'. It really is hard to explain -- not to mention three blanks after a last page 125.)

10. Re: Survey for people using page numbering
Eric @ MCA Jul 29, 2009 3:39 PM (in response to Peter Spier)One suggestion is that it might almost be cool to have an examples section for common/uncommon situations and what section numbering and flyout menu options you need to get them to work?
For example, teacher's editions will often end up with pages sequences like:
*123-125, *125A-D, *126-127, *127A-F, *128-140, etc.
To do the letter sections, you would need the following in your document:
* section starts at these points.
- Page shuffling off
- For letter pages, insert page number into prefix area & set number to A, B, C format.
