2. Re: How convert background white in a photo to a different color
Gyno-jiz Jul 29, 2009 3:10 PM (in response to JWH-NIRC)A few options. Try creating a new solid color layer, picking the color of your choosing, and then setting that layer to multiply. Or you could create a gradient map adjustment layer and pick the color of your choosing as the "white" end. You could also set the image mode to duotone, and make one ink black, with an untouched curve, and the other ink the color of your choosing. Alter the curve by setting the 0% dot to 100 (0:100).
If you need only certain parts of the image changed from white to another color, while keeping the foreground objects' white as white, then you'll need to paint out the effect in the foreground, with either of the above first two suggestions, using a black brush on the mask associated with the adjustment layers.

JWH-NIRC Jul 29, 2009 3:43 PM (in response to Gyno-jiz)Thanks for offering to look at the file. Here it is. I have marked it "orange on blue" because I want an orange flower on a blue background. But any colors will do--as long as they replace black and white.

Gyno-jiz Jul 29, 2009 9:11 PM (in response to JWH-NIRC)Try using the camera icon in the message composer in this forum to embed the pic, instead of attaching a file. You can post a screenshot; a high-resolution file will probably be overkill.

JWH-NIRC Jul 30, 2009 1:55 AM (in response to Gyno-jiz)Well now, I AM impressed! That is precisely the result I wanted to see. The only difficulty is that the instructions are a little too advanced for me. Could you guide me step by step through the process, starting from the basic layer? Sorry, but I am really new at this process and have only used the more general Photoshop tools in the past.

9. Re: How convert background white in a photo to a different color
Gyno-jiz Jul 30, 2009 6:50 AM (in response to JWH-NIRC)Layer > new adjustment layer > gradient map. Click on the black to white gradient in that dialog box. Another gradient dialogue box will pop up. Click on the left-hand slider, the bottom one, which is color (the top one is transparency). In the color field below that, click on the black swatch. Pick the color you need. Now repeat for the right-hand bottom slider.

JWH-NIRC Jul 30, 2009 4:33 PM (in response to Gyno-jiz)Thank you so much. I tried 3 other forums before coming here and finding PERFECT help. The others were vague and none of them came up with the simple solution you did.
