1. Re: Premiere CS4 freezes opening a project with many items
JSS1138 Jul 30, 2009 8:39 AM (in response to Joe Riggs)Well, the freeze certainly isn't normal. The only thing I can think of is to open with all media offline, then link one by one till you get to the one Premiere doesn't like. It could be a corrupted clip that's causing the freeze.

2. Re: Premiere CS4 freezes opening a project with many items
Bill Hunt Jul 30, 2009 9:14 AM (in response to JSS1138)Along with Jim's advice, I have a question: where are these Assets stored? Are they all on internal HDD's on your computer? You don't have any on a NAS, a DVD-Data, or a network drive do you?
For PrPro to not find the Assets that are Linked, it would seem that they have been moved, or that the drive letter of their storage location has changed. You should not have to re-Link, unless similar has occurred. The hanging does indicate a problem Asset, or limited access to the drive/device on which the Assets reside.
Good luck,
Hunt

Joe Riggs Jul 31, 2009 4:19 PM (in response to Joe Riggs)Everything is on an external hard drive, it's my friend's project that originated from CS3, and I'm doing some work on it. So, it's been moved from computer to computer, but all the files are in the same place.

Bill Gehrke Jul 31, 2009 5:22 PM (in response to Joe Riggs)What you have to do is assign a drive letter to the disk. So that Windows recognizes the drive by the letter and does not just assign it a letter.

5. Re: Premiere CS4 freezes opening a project with many items
Joe Riggs Aug 7, 2009 6:46 AM (in response to Bill Gehrke)It seems the freeze may be occurring because I deleted the preview files?
When I open the project, it asks for the render files, I select skip previews or offline all, and after a second or two the application freezes. Furthermore, if I click on it or another application, the Premiere screen becomes white.
In the task manager, I see Premiere "not responding", and then a duplicate copy of the same thing appears. The other weird aspect is the CPU usage doesn't jump to 100%; it jumps to about 33% and freezes.

JSS1138 Aug 7, 2009 6:52 AM (in response to Joe Riggs)That's still not normal. Skipping previews should not cause any issues.

7. Re: Premiere CS4 freezes opening a project with many items
Harm Millaard Aug 7, 2009 6:54 AM (in response to Joe Riggs)Only skip the preview files, do not offline them. First make sure that the drive letter is exactly the same on all PC's with Disk Management. Then skip all preview files and rerender, after all indexing and conforming has finished. This may take a while, since you are using very slow externals, but that is your choice. Do not do anything on your PC untill this process has finished. Then save the project. It will open faster next time.
The fact that CPU useage is so low is because you use external (USB?) disks, that are way too slow to keep the CPU occupied. Just have patience.
If your project had over 5000 clips, this may become tedious, but 200+ is really a small number.

8. Re: Premiere CS4 freezes opening a project with many items
Joe Riggs Aug 7, 2009 7:08 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)I should clarify that this freeze involves a different project, this project was working fine, and the only thing I have done since then is deleted the preview files. I took a break from the project for a week and then returned today, to discover that I can't even open the project by selecting skip previews or media offline, because when I do so it freezes.
I'm not using any external drives for this project. The project file, media, and scratch are all on the same internal SATA drive, and I have Premiere and Windows XP on another SATA drive.
Thank you for your help.

Are we clear here: You are not making any sense!!!
How can you expect any of us to reply sensibly, if you don't make any sense?

10. Re: Premiere CS4 freezes opening a project with many items
Joe Riggs Aug 7, 2009 7:52 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)I apologize for the confusion. My last two posts are referring to a completely different project from the original post (located on a different drive). Since it had similar symptoms, I didn't want to start a new thread.

Joe Riggs Aug 7, 2009 5:47 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)I was able to solve the problem with a workaround brought to my attention by Colin Brougham.
Import Premiere project into After Effects
Export Premiere project

13. Re: Premiere CS4 freezes opening a project with many items
Bill Hunt Aug 7, 2009 6:16 PM (in response to Joe Riggs)Joe,
Glad that I was tied up in another forum, as I would have been totally lost too, had I not dropped in, when I did.
Getting back to your original problem/Project. I shuttle Projects between my laptop and my workstation. Some have 10x the Assets, that your's did, and have never had an issue. Per Harm's comment, you really do need to set the drive letter the same in the OS of each machine. I do this, before I start a shuttle Project, and work backward, so my first external was Z:\. I set it to Z:\ on all computers. That keeps PrPro happy, as it can find all links perfectly, when I move the external. To do this AFTER one starts a Project can be a bit more work. If you set the external to F:\ on your computer, but your friend already has an F:\, things can get busy re-linking, when the Project is first opened.
Now, back to read about problem #2, but sounds like Colin has handled it for you already.
Good luck,
Hunt
