New here, and new to Illustrator.  In fact I'm pretty computer illiterate.  I'm trying to teach it to myself today and I'm, of course, running in to roadblocks.

I have taken a simple black and white illustration and I'm trying to give it a simple background.  I've taken a dot pattern symbol and given it a gradient.

I made the b/w illustration transparent.  Both layers are visible, but the b/w is behind the yellow gradient background.

How do I make the b/w (Layer 1) be the prominent layer on top of the yellow?

Thank you and forgive my stupidity!
