1. Re: Onlocation firewire to USB video camera?
Colin Brougham Aug 3, 2009 7:15 AM (in response to J Dell)Even if you could find such an adapter, it still would not work because the limitation is in the camera--it doesn't stream live video out through the USB port. As far as I'm aware, no camera does this. The USB ports are there for file-based transfer of recorded footage from some sort of solid-state memory contained in the camera, whether it's internal memory, an SD card, a hard drive, or something else.
Your only bet in this case is to use the analog video outputs (assuming the camera has them--this is what you'd normally use to view the camera's footage directly on a TV) and then an analog-to-digital converter that would plug in to the computer via 1394. You'd have to set the camera's analog output mode to SD, if you have the option, and you would need an A/D converter like those from Canopus/Grass Valley (ie. ADVC-110). This is pretty cumbersome, but it's the only way you'd be able to monitor from this particular camera via OnLocation.

maerskman Jul 5, 2010 11:27 PM (in response to Colin Brougham)A similar problem - I've a Panasonic AG-HMC21E which I want to connect to CS5 On Location on my HP EliteBook 8730w - neither has firewire but both have HDMI and USB2.0. The camera also has component out and AV out, but neither of them look too potentially useful.I've tried the HDMI to HDMI with no joy, any thoughts?

Charles832 Aug 4, 2010 7:05 PM (in response to J Dell)Seems nuts that we spend Thousand on Adobe Production Premium, then can;t use ON LOCATION!
My Camera- Canon 7d IS the problem I think because even though it has HDMI out, I think it is only for viewing and you would see the record button lit up if you could view it in On Location...Frustrates me though....Anybody know a solution I would love tohear it...
SO....IS there a way to make good use of On Location....if you cannot shoot your video to it?

bbb_999 Aug 6, 2010 9:23 AM (in response to Charles832)Certainly!
OnLocation can import and analyze numerous file-based formats, not just 1394-dependent formats it captures directly.
Use the project panel to organize your production into scenes and shots, or import an Adobe Story script and have OnLocation do it for you. Also, check out "timestamped placeholders" in the help; even if you're filming on a camera not tethered to your system, you can use OnLocation to record notes and metadata during the shoot, and OnLocation can match imported clips to those placeholders.
