CC Particle World has issues on Nehalem Xeon Macs. They have been rectified for CS4 with the 9.0.2 update, but not for CS3, so essentially you are seeing "expected behavior" with no hope of getting it ficxed other than to upgrade to CS4 or buy the comemrcial HD version of the Cycore Effects. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.
The problem is hyperthreading. If you disable hyperthreading AE CS3 will function normally. There are a few ways you can disable hyperthreading.
- Through the processor preference pane (included with Xcode).
- Type this into terminal (without the quotes): "hwprefs cpu_ht=false".
- Build an applescript application (so you can keep it on the dock): Do a spotlight search for "AppleScript Editor". Launch the editor and put the following line of code in there and save it as an application: do shell script "hwprefs cpu_ht=false"
- Or just download this little AppleScript application that I wrote that help you turn on/off hyperthreading: http://www.satymahajan.com/changeht
Please note that if your computer sleeps, hyperthreading will be enabled on wake up, so you'll have to disable it again. Other than that, I've tested this on both Leopard and Snow Leopard and it works. Good luck!
Hey, thanks for sharing that bit of geek tech.
Thanks a lot! This made my day.
I downloaded your Change HT application and I'm getting the following error when trying to run it to turn off Hyperthreading:
Is there anything i can do to fix this?
I really need to get CC Particle World running CS3 on my PowerMac 2x2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon running Leopard 10.5.8.
Thanks for any help you can suggest.
Try step 1. of my suggestions. You'll need to either install Xcode from the Apple Developer Connection website. Or you can install it off of your Leopard disk that came with your Mac Pro. Once you do that, follow the instructions outlined here:
When you launch the processor preference pane (from System Preferences), you'll have the ability to shut off cores and disable hyperthreading. You can also add an icon to the menu bar, so you can quickly disable hyperthreading from there.
I hope this helps. Sorry the app didn't work for you. Not sure why that is.
