Try download and install with NORTONS Disabled....You may need to download fromhttp://download.cnet.com/Adobe-Reader/3000-10743_4-10000062.html?tag=mncol That should work...
If you want the updates after that do not try to update from "Update Available" Pop-up...
Open the Adobe Reader Program and Click on the "HELP" Tab, In the drop down menu Click on Update..
That will download and install the latest...Version 9.1.3
Use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup tool. Then reinstall Reader 9.1

That will download the installer that contains Acrobat.com Adobe AIR. The installer without these can be downloaded from the Adobe site http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.1/enu/AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe - which seems what the OP wants (and has).
Although CNET is a reputed site, unlikely to offer any tampered software, but
- they do not offer alternate builts (like in this case, Reader without Acrobat.com & Adobe AIR);
- they are chronically late with updates, often weeks, sometimes months!
In the case of Adobe Reader, previous versions (back to 4.x) can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/
No luck. Still have the same issue. The crash immediate with no progress on the install. It acts like a conflict in installer startup....
I tried that around the same time I posted my question, without success.
