I'm pretty sure it uses the APIs in the OS to draw some text into a bitmap. Flash doesn't actually look at the font files for device text.

I am working on on developing a software which converts .ppt to .swf.
When I was working on fonts I found that there is slight difference between the representation of text in .ppt and .swf although I was using the same font name and size.
This difference increases when I apply some transformations, like I make it bold or italic or both.
I want to know why this difference is there?
I used to think that both applications use the .ttf files and interprete the text differently. But as you say there exists Flash's own API, so I am still confused how flash exactly displays text.
and why it can't display the text in same way as that of powerpoint when I make it bold or italic.
