1. Re: Better way to create “hanging titles”?
P Spier Aug 18, 2009 5:56 AM (in response to Geert DD)I think anchored objects is probably the best out-of-the-box alternative. You can create an object style that contains paragraph and character styles, and anchored object positioning, to make it faster.

Geert DD Aug 18, 2009 6:05 AM (in response to P Spier)I was not aware that object styles could contain anchored object options. Just played around with it. This speeds up the process a lot. Very useful.
If anybody has any other tips or techniques, I would love to hear them.

Eugene Tyson Aug 18, 2009 7:58 AM (in response to Geert DD)I would have just made a text frame that spanned the yellow frame so the header could be included.
I'd indent the body type and use a nested style for Headings.
In my example file below, you can edit the Heading Style to view the nested style.
All you have to do is type Heading 5 and TAB in front of a paragraph and choose Heading style from the Paragraph Styles.

Geert DD Aug 18, 2009 8:44 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Sounds interesting, however, I am not able to open that inx-file unfortunately. What kind of file is it? Maybe it is because I work in CS3?

Does that include third party products?

Geert DD Aug 19, 2009 4:01 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Works now. Thank you. Clever use of indentions and nested styles. I fully get the idea now. Definitely a fast process once set up.

9. Re: Better way to create “hanging titles”?
Geert DD Aug 20, 2009 1:14 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)One downside of this method that I just thought of, is the problem that occurs when you have longer titles which span multiple lines. They won't wrap automatically as does happen in a separate anchored text frame.

10. Re: Better way to create “hanging titles”?
Eugene Tyson Aug 20, 2009 1:48 AM (in response to Geert DD)Well for more than lines I'd use an anchored frame, and I'd put the text inside a table. When a table is set to "At Least" in the height of the cell, then the cell will increase in size when text goes over more lines. And the Table won't be bound by the text box, so that would get rid of the problem of text ever oversetting in the frame.
Depending on the job, it might be easier to do both workflows, for example if you only have 3 or 4 headings over 200 pages that go over 2 lines.
But if it was the other way around you might want all the headings in an anchored text frame.
I've done books where I had legislation in the sidebars, and using the method I posted earlier, it was easy enough to make a few extra styles combat the odd occasion the side bar text went over 2 lines.
Whatever is easiest to do and the easiest to work with, both now and in the future is the way to proceed with the job.

Sorry...
To automate the creation of the headings (and return them to the text
if you'll need to export the text for editing) you can use this: http://in-tools.com/plugin.php?p=18
And AutoFlow Pro http://in-tools.com/autoflowpro.html can
automatically make the side heads frames "springy" to accommodate
exactly the text required.
If you do a lot of this stuff, the plugins will pay for themselves in
no time...
