Masks instead of path cropping for print publishing

As occasional user with very low level knowledge I use PS more or less only to roughly manipulate images and create cropped objects to verify my ideas for brochure layout drafts in my old Pagemaker. The real work is later done by professional companies.

Is there a way to create cropped objects by using layer masks instead of vectorized path cropping for later importing in page editting application? I.e. to make the masked portions transparent in a printed docoment, such as GIF does on the web. After spending hours and hours it appears to me there is no way to avoid paths techniques. Can somebody confirm this to me? Or better - how it eventually might work.

      Thanks

I don't really get what you are trying to say. It shouldn't matter at all how a transparency is created. Even paths only present a differnt way of generating a layer mask. Your problems are more likely simply due to using software from the last century, so to speak, and it not being able to understand newer additions to the Photoshop format and only using the flattened presentation. I don't think you can realyl get a different workflow with that and should consider switching to InDesign, combined with Illustrator, i.e. upgrade your PS license to a full Design Premium suite. Even if it's just for your own little ventures, the workflow is much better. And who knows, might even help you to better exchange data with your "professionals"...
