Have you formatted each field as a numeric value?
What is the calculation method you are using?
What are your field names?
Exactly what is the error you are receiving?

The built in calcs all use JS under the covers. The formatting of these predefined scripts depend on certain assumptions about the field names.
Your field names must not contain Spaces or Punctuation of any kind.
Here's an article on basic calculations. It comes with an example PDF

Look at the "Calculate" tab and you should see the 3 calculation options. You can do the same for the subtotals, you will other methods to accomplish the same result.
