In Fireworks I have created an animation and a rollover hotspot that is supposed to start the anim.

          I might be complicating this...
In simple terms. I want to rollover one part of an image and another image appear elsewhere on my page. I have managed to do this but I now want the image to fade into view not appear instantly. There has got to be an easy way to do this

There isn't. HTML doesn't lend itself to fading images.

You can use some fancy javascript, but it's not fully cross-browser
            compliant.

You can use Flash for the incoming image, and that will give you a good
fade, but those without Flash will see nothing, and you will likely add
quite a bit of weight to the page for this cosmetic effect.

You can use an animated GIF image to achieve the fade, but for sure, you
will add hundreds of Kilobytes to your page doing it this way.

I don't believe there are any other options.

Here's a tutorial on how to create an animated rollover that could be
              adapted for a disjoint rollover.
