Eclipse: won't open a file... says it's "read-only" and opens blank!

Okay, okay, I'm tryin'' to use the Eclipse editor and tryin' to love it, but it doesn't seem to like me:

      1. When I open an existing file, it says, "file is read-only," and when I click OK on that box, there's nothing there!   The file in question does exist and it most-certainly is not empty.  (And needless to say, I don't want to take the chance of it becoming empty!)
      2. When I try to create a new file, it says something like "container must be declared" but there is apparently no way to do that.  At least, no apparent way!

Like I said, I'm trying to get a handle on this "misbegotten cup of cold coffee" but we do not seem to be having a very good honeymoon . . .
