1. Re: Will using only one Xeon CPU on a dual socket mobo work like a single socket system?
Harm Millaard Sep 4, 2009 5:13 PM (in response to nados)Yes. But on a dual socket board you have the advantage of beter quality capacitors for the power supply, you have more memory slots and possibly (definitely in the case of SuperMicro) better airflow. The downside is the eATX size, which limits your choice in cases.

nados Sep 4, 2009 5:51 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Harm,
Actually, Supermicro does have the ATX X8DAL-i based on the Intel 5500 chipset that supports Intel's Xeon® 5500 series processors in the LGA 1366 socket that i could put into my Antec 300 case. I don't know, however, how the 5500 chipset rates along with the boards using the 5520 chipset though.
In any case, i do have the Ext. ATX Supermicro SC942S-600B case that holds my old dual Xeon NLE system. I also have two 10 x 3.5" SATA Hot-swappable Drive Bays i haven't used yet that can hold 5 drives each.
The only problem i have with the case is that it comes with a triple redundant 600W power supply that has tiny fans in it that are very loud. If i could replace that PSU with - say - a standard size PC Power & Cooling 910 watt unit - i would be in heaven.

nados Sep 4, 2009 5:54 PM (in response to nados)I just have to figure out which Xeon processor is closest in speed and preformance to the i7 920.

4. Re: Will using only one Xeon CPU on a dual socket mobo work like a single socket system?
Harm Millaard Sep 4, 2009 5:56 PM (in response to nados)Sorry to disappoint you, but you can't. And, yes, they are very loud. I would contact SuperMicro and ask them to help you in getting a 865(R if you want redundancy) PSU into your case. That should not be all too difficult, because I think they work with standard dimensions. The 865Q PSU is pretty quiet and fits their standard dimensions that are vastly different from standard ATX PSU's. Take one of your PSU's out and you will see it differs from the standard PSU like a banana differs from a watermelon.

5. Re: Will using only one Xeon CPU on a dual socket mobo work like a single socket system?
Harm Millaard Sep 4, 2009 5:59 PM (in response to nados)That would be the E5550, at least at stock speed.

6. Re: Will using only one Xeon CPU on a dual socket mobo work like a single socket system?
Bill Gehrke Sep 11, 2009 4:26 PM (in response to nados)This is not much help but Supermicro informed me that the power supply from this unit would fit in your (and my) case. It is only 650 watts and it still is redundant but I got no information on the noise.
