1. Re: Location of the media cache file
JSS1138 Sep 12, 2009 1:57 PM (in response to Howard Hoffman)The Cache files are still in the Project folder by default. I don't believe you can change this.
The Media Cache Database files (something different), are stored in a hidden directory under My Documents. These files are very, very small and can safely be ignored.

2. Re: Location of the media cache file
Howard Hoffman Sep 12, 2009 2:11 PM (in response to JSS1138)The cache files are located in Documents & Settings folder for me. I see option in Premiere to change it, but not Encore. The cache file is rather large. For 4GB mpeg, the CFA file is about 1.7GB.

JSS1138 Sep 12, 2009 4:25 PM (in response to Howard Hoffman)I don't believe Encore creates CFA files, only Premiere.

Howard Hoffman Sep 12, 2009 4:31 PM (in response to JSS1138)For each mpeg source (m2v + ac3), I have one CFA and one pek

5. Re: Location of the media cache file
JSS1138 Sep 12, 2009 4:39 PM (in response to Howard Hoffman)OK, but the ones from Encore get created in the Project folder, specifically in the "Project">Cache>Media Cache Files>mlf.cache.MACC folder. If there is a way to change where those get stored, I am unaware of it. For me, the default is the project folder.

6. Re: Location of the media cache file
Bill Hunt Sep 12, 2009 5:02 PM (in response to Howard Hoffman)In En 2.0, these are created in the Project folder. CS4 has made some changes, regarding the ancillary files.
Good luck,
Hunt

Howard Hoffman Sep 12, 2009 5:30 PM (in response to JSS1138)@Jim
The source files are m2v and ac3 created by AME and never imported back into Premiere.
The cache CFA files must be created by Encore.
@Hunt
CS2 and CS3 both use the project folder.
Is there a setting for it like in Premiere in CS4?

8. Re: Location of the media cache file
Neil Wilkes Sep 13, 2009 6:05 AM (in response to Howard Hoffman)CFA = Conformed Audio.
This must not be removed, or else Encore will simply wastetimerebuilding them.
It is done because there are no built in Dolby Digital Decoders in the system, so to preview the audio in your projects the application automatically turns any audio into 32-bit Floating Point files. There is no way to prevent this from happening.
If space is really that tight, the best you can do is to clear the media cache when you have saved & closed the project.
They will get rebuilt in the next launch though

9. Re: Location of the media cache file
Howard Hoffman Sep 13, 2009 7:21 PM (in response to Neil Wilkes)OK, that explained the CFA file.
Clearing media database every time is a bad idea. It will force regenerating pek file for thousands of clips that I have in Premiere.
I can delete cache files manually. However, Encore will recreate quite some even I did not open projects that used them.
System disk space is an issue for me.

10. Re: Location of the media cache file
Bill Hunt Sep 13, 2009 7:32 PM (in response to Howard Hoffman)Howard,
Depending of some aspects, the Media Cache files for En will be different, than they are for PrPro. Yes, both can be CFA's, but they should be in different locations, unless CS4 has combined these locations.
Good luck,
Hunt

11. Re: Location of the media cache file
Howard Hoffman Sep 14, 2009 11:41 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)I am 100% sure those CFA files are generated by Encore as I did not open Premiere during the test.
However, Premiere Pro preference does affect Encore, except the option to save cache file with the project when possible. So in CS4, the media cache is shared.
I don't understand what Adobe is thinking here to be so inconsistent.

12. Re: Location of the media cache file
geohei Sep 15, 2009 7:28 AM (in response to Howard Hoffman)I can fully confirm Howward's statements. I have 512 MB free on system partition, and this is not even enough to audio conform (.cfa file) a 40 minutes mp2 file! Indeed, Encore CS4 doesn't seem to allow changing the path of the cache. How can they do such a .... ?!?!

13. Re: Location of the media cache file
Howard Hoffman Sep 15, 2009 7:37 AM (in response to geohei)goehei,
If you have Premiere CS4 installed, change the option in its preference -> media also change the cache file location for Encore.
I think it's a bad idea to share the media database b/w Premiere and Encore. The media used in the 2 application really have no overlap.

Thanks a lot !!!
Indeed not very intuitive or well designed.

15. Re: Location of the media cache file
Lewis James Nine Jan 8, 2011 6:42 PM (in response to JSS1138)Where is the Project folder located, Jim? I see the project tab when I launch my project but the folder?
I'm having a terrible time encoding a project in Encore and Bill Hunt suggested that I delete media cache files. I have been re-configuring the menu structure in my project and swapping video files all over the place and Bill said that these media cache files could be the culprit. Please advise me here, if you would.
Thanks!
Lewis

Howard Hoffman Jan 8, 2011 8:14 PM (in response to Lewis James Nine)Open Premiere and go to preference -> media, you will see the folder for the cache.
But, why are you using Encore to do encoding?
