Why is exporting to H.264 so difficult?

I should note I'm using the trial version.  The source file is a .mp4 h.264 compression file from my flip camera.  It can be played with no problems by either Quicktime or WM Player.  I'm just testing the best way to output the finished video project to a file on my computer.  I'll eventually upload it to youtube or put it on my iphone or whatever.  It seems to me that outputting it as another h.264 file would make sense, but when I do that it actually creates some bizare .m2t file that my computer doesn't know what to do with.

Why can't I just export it as another (single) .mp4 file that can be opened by either windows media player or quicktime?
