1. Re: Convert to Optimized Graphic increasing project file size
Peter Flynn (Adobe) Sep 17, 2009 2:59 PM (in response to trancepriest)Unfortunately, "Optimized Graphic" is a bit of a misnomer -- this feature compresses vector graphics, but it doesn't do anything for bitmap/raster images like the one you're working with. In future versions of Catalyst, this will be named "Optimize Vector Graphics" to more closely match what it does.
To optimize raster graphics, you generally just want to compress the image in a format like JPEG. Stay tuned for an easier way to do this, but for now.... In your favorite image editor, use Save As (or sometimes "Export," e.g. if you're using Fireworks) to set compression settings while saving as a JPG, keeping an eye on the resulting file size as you adjust the settings. Then you can import these smaller image files into Catalyst and dicth your original, larger assets.

trancepriest Sep 17, 2009 3:53 PM (in response to Peter Flynn (Adobe))Peter,
Only 4 images were imported as bitmap/raster are now utilized and those are the jpeg ones in the portfolio section and one in the rental section. All the others were imported from illustrator as vector images and then optimized. The images that are bitmap are around 1098KB. Due to the images being so small compared to the project size being so large... I'm wondering if duplicated assets are all over the place. I did notice on each optimized vector conversion... the project file size was jumping by 40+ MB. This happened when I first started converting the illustrator artwork and the project size jumped from less than 200MB to over 334.2MB now.

Peter Flynn (Adobe) Sep 17, 2009 6:13 PM (in response to trancepriest)trancepriest,
When you say the size of your project... are you referring to the FXP file size? When you use Publish to export a SWF file for distribution/upload, do you find that the SWF file is also bigger once the vector graphics are optimized? Or does the SWF get smaller as the FXP gets bigger?
Thanks,
- Peter

Yes I was referring to the FXP size. The SWF gets smaller as the FXP gets bigger. Before I optimized some of the main art pieces the SWF was over 5MB and now its down to 2MB in Catalyst.

The same project when "Export Flex Project" out of Flash Builder is 21.8MB.

Thanks for the replies. We'd like to take a look at your FXP to investigate further. Would you be willing to post it here, or email it to us privately? (pflynn at adobe dot com)
Thanks,

8. Re: Convert to Optimized Graphic increasing project file size
Peter Flynn (Adobe) Sep 18, 2009 5:17 PM (in response to trancepriest)This looks like a bug in the beta. I think the problem actually lies with Publish SWF -- it's not cleaning up some of its temp files properly, so each time you publish a copy of your SWF and all its assets are getting saved inside the FXP file permanently. (I'm guessing each time you optimized some vectors, you published right afterward in order to check the new SWF size).
This bug should be fixed in upcoming releases of Catalyst. But in the meantime, I can give you a workaround:
- Open your FXP
- Switch to Code view
- Expand the "Project Navigator" tree at the right, and select all the folders named "bin-release1" ... "bin-release17"
- Right-click and choose Delete
- You'll see a warning about "linked resources." Hit Ok to continue.
- Save your FXP again
Your FXP file should now be about 300 MB smaller
Hope that helps! And sorry for the problems.
