rounded corner effect - cs4 Illustrator

    handeye105

every now and again I need to quickly render a rectangle with rounded corners, then return one or two of the corners within the shape back to square angles.

In CS3, the round corner filter would alter the vector path of the rectangle, giving 'real' curves which then could be easily squared back up by removing curve pts.

In CS4, the rounded corner option is an effect, and when I use the 'expand appearance' command under 'object', I lose the original path of the rectangle's shape, instead getting a solid, with a compound path mask to create the 'look' of a stroked path.

The problem is it is infinitely more difficult to edit, now I can't square back one or two of the corners. Am I missing something?

      Thank you for your help
