Gyno-jiz Sep 24, 2009 10:13 PM (in response to talbot)You might take a look at the new quick selection tool. It's pretty cool. Also remember that eyedropper sample size can have unexpected results on the magic wand tool. Check that it's set to point sample or 3 x 3.

Also make sure the tolerance of the Wand is low enough. And another tool to consider is the new and improved Color Range tool.

3. Re: Magic wand not behaving as expected
talbot Sep 25, 2009 12:14 AM (in response to John Joslin)Thanks to both of you!
I forgot to right click the tool and was actually in the Quick tool mode the whole time...
So I switched to the wand I was used to and now all is pretty good.
I did try the quick tool but must have been doing something wrong and/or it didn't work easily enough...
So to refine this, using the wand, it does an initial select around everything which is great except it doesn't toltally wrap around something. My impulse is to tgry changing the color from dark blue to black but thought I should ask if there was a way to stretch the selection to include something that is going to be inverted. Can I pull that out to have it included?
I have to get up early so will check back in about 12 hours. Thanks in advance for hanging in on this - I want it to look perfect!

John Joslin Sep 25, 2009 12:58 AM (in response to talbot)The Color Range tool is by far the best tool for this job.
Just move the Fuzziness slider till it looks good.
If the selection needs it, you can smooth it using Select > Refine edge...

5. Re: Magic wand not behaving as expected
talbot Sep 25, 2009 2:26 PM (in response to John Joslin)I have no clue how to use this tool. Do I use the wand first to select the area and then switch to that tool (I found it under Select -> Color Range...) and then I can grab the selections and adjust them? Sorry, I don't have the time right now to research this tool so if You could give a pointer, otherwise I'm just going to try working with the wand some more.

The tool is very simple and works on its own.
If you have have the image of your signature open, crop it down if necessary and then open Select > Color Range.
Make sure the left eye dropper is selected and click in the image on the signature itself.
Move the Fuzziness slider to get the best contrast and click OK
The writing is now selected.

8. Re: Magic wand not behaving as expected
John Joslin Sep 25, 2009 2:57 PM (in response to John Joslin)You can improve the selection by going to Refine Edge, pulling the sliders to zero and then increasing smoothing.
