# Having problem creating 2 circles intersected with 3D-bevel applied...

Well it seemes simple,

Need to create 2 intersecting circles. Easy enough to patch the cross-section in 2-D mode.

But have the rings appear linked in 3-D mode with a bevel has resulted in several weird looking things

In the top image the circles are grouped, so the effect is applied to the group of two circles. In the bottom image, the circles are not grouped, so the effect is applied independently to each circle. Unfortunately I don’d know of a way to have the bevel only recognize the outer edge of the illustrator and not be applied where the rings intersect. That will require expanding the effect and manually editing the paths.

Each chain is one simple closed path (a cross, a hexagon, and a circle) with four Fills. 3D Effect and two Transform Effects applied to each Fill. Each 3D Effect revolves 180°. The Transform Effects position the four half-rings.

Correction:

Expand the strokes so they are now fills. Turn the group into a Live Paint group and use the Live Paint Bucket to fill areas as you wish, then use the Live Paint Selection Tool to delete the segments that are non needed. At top is the resulting outline. Group, then apply the 3D effect.

What you might consider is extruding the rings separately making them  symbols and the mapping the to a rectangle turned in to an extruded volume and given and invisible geometry that way they also rotate together well and you can give them a perspective. it might be possible do the same for intersecting rings. This way the rings do not join..

I'll give it a try, maybe this isn't the app to do this?

Any good freeware out there for this?

...maybe this isn't the app to do this?

May be. As you can see, Illustrator's 3D Effect is crippled by its inability to orient two objects differently within the same 3D coordinate system. (Its predicessor, Adobe Dimensions, on which it is based did not have this debilitating limitation.) Thus the convoluted and "clever" workarounds.

Any decent 3D modeller can make two intersecting rings. Understand, though, that the vast majority of 3D programs do not render to 2D vector artwork; they render to raster images. That may or may not be a problem to you.

As for freeware (or open source), there are several. Do a Google search. A quick & easy freeware 3D program is Google SketchUp.

Hey Jet

Yes i remember dimensions and wondered why they abandoned a

specialized app.

I have SketchUp but haven't figured out how to use it for what I need

to just yet.

I'll keep trying...... Thanks for your help

Hey Scott

Yes I have tried this, but see where the circles cross each other. I

want them to be 2 separate rings, one inside of the other, not

crossing through eachother

Thanks for trying, Lisa

Lisa,

I'm not completely satisfied with this, but was able to come up with what I think you want. After applying the 3D effect to the two rings, I expanded the top ring. Then I erased/deleted the overlapping part.

Come to think of it, this could be more easily, and more flexibly, done by using a Opacity mask.

• ###### 11. Re: Having problem creating 2 circles intersected with 3D-bevel applied...

Lisa the answer is simple as I wrote all you need to do is make the rings separately if you need to have the work together you map them to a rectaangle with an invisible geometry.

like such:

very simple nothing hi tech about it.

I assume, based on what Lisa said from the start she already knows how to mask, punch, etc.:

Easy enough to patch the cross-section in 2-D mode.
