How to do a select a fixed ratio region and crop(hide)?

    avpromedia Community Member

I want to select a smaller area of a photo while preserving the canvas aspect ratio of 3:2 (from a DSLR) and crop it with the hide option.

I can select a fixed ratio region and then use image->crop. However that doesn't give the hide option.

If I use the crop tool I cannot get a 3:2 ratio area automatically.

      How do I do it?

You can do it with the crop tool, by typing the ratio into the height/width fields in the option bar, and then leave the resolution field blank. This will produce a clean crop - without resampling - at that ratio.

Problem is it seems to add dimensional units by itself, it doesn't accept "naked" ratio numbers, so that means extra work if you don't have standard dimensions for all images.

This adding of units hasn't bothered me before, so I haven't even noticed it - is there a way around that? Surely the crop tool should have an option to just crop at a fixed ratio?

EDIT: On second thought, you'd of course have to set dimensions anyway if you just crop willy-nilly at 3:2. So maybe the point is moot.
