    flv files

    therayman Community Member

Is there any way to import flv files into premier? I have a documentary to put together in a hurry and although the original files have been requested I need to throw an edit together to show context. I have downloaded the flv files we want to use.

FLV is a dellivery format. You may be better off with a storyboard approach of stills till you get the original material.

Agreed, you should obtain the original source if at all possible. It's never a good idea to edit .flv or any other highly compressed format.

But, if you absolutely have to work with .flv files there are plug-ins available, one such being http://www.moyea.com/import-flv

Unfortunately this doesn't support CS4 or X64 Vista but thanks anyway.

There are other converters but I would have thought Adobe would be able to

import one of its own formats.

I can import .flv files into CS4, even ones I created in Sorenson Squeeze.  How were your .flv files created?

What, exactly, happens when you try to import your .flv files?

I get an error message. This file appears to have no media data. The Flv

files came from a client and I have no idea how they were created. They are

full screen HD quality but I will be reducing them to SD video for broadcast

                  and dvd output.

Then the files are corrupted, either at the source or during acquisition.  Re-acquire them.

In that case waiting for the originals as requested is better.

No they play perfectly and I can import them into Flash and use them there

                        for web output.

But my edit is required in order to release the originals.

Prepare yourself for a long wait. You can't edit till they release the originals and they can't release them till you have edited. A viscuous circle.

I don't know what else to tell you.  My .flv files import, play and edit perfectly in Pr CS4.  So something is different about your files.  When you discover what that difference is, then there may be a way to correct it.

If the client won't release the originals, maybe they can provide you with another downloadable format besides .flv for your proposed edit?  Maybe lo-res .wmv or .mov files?  Or some flavor of MPEG1, MPEG2 or MPEG4 (*not* DivX or XviD!)?

I'm curious as to whether there is a difference in the flv files Jeff and therayman are using.  Therayman, take a look at your files with gspot or the like and report what is in there. I'd report the size, frame rate, video codec, audio format, rate, etc.  It also occurs to me that the audio may be mp3 and that has caused problems for some  users.  Does the help file say anything about what sort of flv files are supported.

All of my Flash files have MP3 audio.

I have an assortment of different files. None of them work in Premier not

even the ones I created myself to test it

Too busy on a tight the deadline now. I resorted to filming a full screen of

                                    the file in HD.

Yes I know but it worked well enough and the files are on their way.

                                    Not happy with Adobe.....
