I downloaded a map from the Internet then used live trace and expand to convert it into vector form in Illustrator. Is there a way that I can keep it in vector form when exporting it to another program (I want to export it to Microstation) so that the lines of the map are still editable in microstation? I tried exporting it as a dxf file but it was no longer possible to select individual lines once I opened it in Microstation. Thanks
You may try the different File>Export vector format options and see whether you are lucky.
If you look up About graphic file formats in the Helpfile, you may see which formats are vector.
Try DWG. DXF is unsuitable, as it only writes line entities, as you already have found out. DWG should support Bezier and linear spline entities. Otehr than that, try CAD conversion programs like Deep Exploration CAD Edition or PolyTrans. To convert AI v8 files and PDFs to CAD formats (IGES, STEP etc.)
I seemed to remember somewhere this came up before and i suggested trying wmf or perhaps it was emf , I think wmf and I could be wrong but I think it worked for them.
But it was about two years ago and I am not certain it was the same issue.
