    Unsupported audio rate in file

    fader5 Level 1

"Unsupported audio rate in file" error message is what I get when I try to import any avi file from a Canon SD400 still camera. I also get "unsupported format or damaged file /One of the necessary components may not have been installed."

I have PE3 installed and importing of avi files works fine. I upgrade to PE4 and that's where the problem is.

The properties of the avi file  I'm trying to import are as follows

      Image      width       640

                     height     480

      Audio       Duration 0:00:53

                     Bit rate     88kbps

                     Audio sample size     8 bit

                     audio format           PCM

           Frame rate           30 frames/second

           data rate          14620 kbps

      I'm running windows xp sp3

      2.00 ghz

      1.5gb of ram

info of file when played with cyberlink

      Hardware Information:

All AVI videos play fine with Windows Media Player, Windows Movie Maker, Apple quicktime player 7.6.4, CyberLink. Again Importing in PE3 is not the problem, its with PE4 where it doesn't work.  I thinking it's a codec problem but what .

Atlhough some people can make it work, generally trying to edit vide directly from a still camera can be kind of iffy.

You'll get the best results and have the least problems if you convert the video to DV-AVIs with Windows MovieMaker first, per the FAQs to the right of this forum.

That 8-bit sample size is probably your issue.

What is your Project Preset? It needs to match your source material perfectly.

It is very likely that you will need to convert these files, prior to Import. If you are going to output to DVD-Video, or similar, then I would strongly suggest that you convert to DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio. This is the ultimate format (with the DV CODEC) for PrE to edit smoothly.

Also remember that there is a great difference between a computer being able to play an AV file, and an NLE (Non Linear Editor), like PrE, being able to edit those same files.

Good luck, and we'll be looking for the info on Project Preset,

Any other suggestions on how or what I can change? I installed Pe on my laptop with Vista and it has no problems importing and recognizing these avi files.

Is it some setting in the register that can be added or change?

Or could it be a codec

My registry shows for Premiere Elements

Here's the latestest! I've installed Pre 4 on my son computer and it works fine I'm able to import files that I wasn't able to do on mine. Should I compare his installed codec's to mine  would it be a video or audio ?  Error message again is "Unsupported audio rate in file."

After unistalling somethings (including PRe3 and Pre4, Pinnacle Studio 8(linx)) and reinstallling PRe4 it works like a champ.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
